Fresh off of last week’s win, DSP was out to prove there are no flukes in Basketball, just hard work and skill. It was Trent Pahl starting off on fire, scoring 8 of the first 10 points for the team. The opponents just didn’t seem to have an answer for his speed in the beginning. Same as last week, it was the stamina of the girls that served as the backbone for the team effort. Caitlin McGinn was a defensive force, collecting numerous rebounds and scoring on several second-chance opportunities. DSP ended the first half with a comfortable 13 point lead and were not about to play the second half on cruise control. It seemed as though the opponents waited for the second half to get in gear, cutting the DSP lead to four within the final few minutes. Riding the coattails of their two star players, the opponents were able to keep it interesting , forcing the game into a five minute overtime, tied 40 all. Proving to be clutch as usual, ‘Coach’ Zimmerman and pledge Reed Miller charged the lane and lit it up from downtown to give DSP a two point lead with 58 seconds to go. From then on, the team’s efforts were focused on maintaining possession and running out the clock, which proved successful. In true nail-biter fashion, DSP improved their record to 2-0 and proved that not all wins are pretty.

-Brother Koller

Etiquette Dinner!

November 3, 2009: Last night, 35 brothers and pledges attended an etiquette dinner at the LSC. We heard a great presentation on how to act while at a professional dinner or banquet. I learned how to act courteously in a number of situations that I would have never even thought might come up. Everything imaginable was covered: where your silverware should be placed on your plate when you are resting and when you are finished, how to eat soup, where to place a napkin on your lap and even the proper way butter your role. This was a fun and entertaining event and it gave brothers the chance to take what they learned and apply it in the business world! Thanks to Bryon and Erica for putting on another great professional event!!!

-Brother Moulton

DSP Basketball!!

October 27, 2009 – The boys and girls of DSP are back in action, playing their first game in co-ed basketball, with a few pledges included. DSP started out a little rusty, with the other team scoring eight unanswered points. It was the focus of pledge Reed Miller that started of the scoring with a pair of free throws. And the scoring didn’t stop there. Unquestionably the star of the show, Miller played like his pledge semester was on the line. Miller’s performance was complemented nicely with the blazing speed of Trent Pahl as well as the in your face style of ‘Coach’ Blake Zimmerman. The back bone of the team was truly the efforts of the girls of DSP. With only one girl able to sit out at a time, Jackie Moulton, Emily Boaz, Caitlin McGinn, as well as pledge Morgan “Sky-High” Waugh, the DSP girls showed the true meaning of endurance. The team really caught fire in the second half and with the help of Kevin Gritters, Brian Land, Matt Koller and Jared Goldstein, DSP outran their opponents plain and simple. Towards the end, the name of the game was ‘maintain’. With an overall well rounded performance, they showed they are quite capable of mixing business with kicking butt. Toss up a W for week one, these boys and girls are out to show CSU who we are. This is Delta Sigma Pi.

-Brother Koller

Intramurals

This has been an exciting semester for Intramurals so far. We went 3-1 in boys basketball and made it to the second round of playoffs. It was our best season in many years and felt great to get some solid wins under our belts.

Currently we are in the middle of the flag football season. We have both a boys and girls team this semester, which is awesome to see! Our girls have played extremly well, and have had a couple tough losses, thus far. There last game came down to the wire, when a last second effort was thwarted with an interception in the end zone. Our boys are playing well too. They are currently 2-0. The games are always a fun time and its great to get out and play with our Brothers.

Google Home Page

Check out our Google Apps homepage at the following addres:
http://partnerpage.google.com/csudeltasig.org

Easier access to the blog!!

Now just go to www.csudeltasig.org The seminar was on becoming a CEO, but he had great advice for general career advancement. I found this information to be interesting, sometimes surprising. Take a look.

Speaker: Tim Augustine

If you are going to get an MBA, wait 5 years before you go back. Why? You get a better raise, instead of 2-5% you could get up to 10% and your company may even pay for your tuition. Also, you are more mature at this age and it is easier to apply the skills back to your company's needs.

The school you go to to get an MBA is important. Choose a different school then where you went to for your undergraduate degree. Employers see that you went to the same school and figure that you had the same environment and the same teachers.

Don't take your first job based on the best salary. Because most individuals only stay at their first job for a couple of years, take your first job for the experience and skills it provides. Look for company's that use the Fast Track Program.

In the first 90 days of your job, avoid casual conversations. Office politics. Find out what is going on in the company, but do not agree with or be involved with drama.

Recommended reading materials: "Working with Emotional Intelligence" "Good to Great" "Winning Friends and Influencing People" "The Art of Being a Finisher" "Can I Have Five Minutes of Your Time"

Negotiation skills are key, pick your battles and understand the principle of give and take.

Success is attributed to networking: develop a list of professors, Deltasigs, etc. It's who you know to get your foot in the door, it's what you know to stay there.

When interviewing, remember that it is what you accomplished that matters, not what you did. When you write down you were involved with something, it means more when you can give a story of what you learned or the experiences you had. Also, make sure you make a list of examples: leadership, teamwork, weaknesses, and strengths

Leadership organizations: he recommended looking into Toastmasters International

When looking for jobs, if the industry is urgent rather than stable the employers will usually hire more often and pay more.

Don't be afraid to have a relationship with your boss.

-Brother Brooks 590

Glasses up!

I can officially start acting like a wine snob and know what I am actually doing! Well that is if if I wanted to. As a professional event Delta Sig organized a Wine tour to Vintages in Fort Collins. It was an out of the box professional event, but it was very useful. We learned about the differences between the different types of fines. Of course, we got to sample different kinds of wines to distinguish what makes a particular wine. Vintages, lets their customers customize there favorite kind of wine by taste, all the way down to designing the label. As one brother put it, "It's like the Build-a-Bear for grown ups!" Perhaps the funniest part of the night was when Brother Gritz "joked" about getting a buzz just off smelling the wine. He certainly brought a unique flare to the presentation, but it certainly had the audience captivated. He is part of only a 5 person marketing department that does all the advertisements and marketing communications for Chipotle on a regional and national level. Those simple black and white Chipotle ads you see, he created all of them. I felt like I was meeting a pseudo celebrity! It was very interesting to hear him speak about how lucky he was to get into the industry by taking a rather unconventional path. I was certainly hanging on his every word because I want to get into the same advertising/creative industry. His story and philosophy on life were both intriguing and inspiring. I spoke to him after the event about what advice he could give me to get my foot in the door and he told me this, "Go to all the companies you are interested in, and instead of going in for a job interview just talk to them about the business and become educated in the company workings. Your passion and interest in the company will keep you in the minds of hiring executives if you choice to interview with them in the future". Oh, and he gave everyone in attendance a free burrito. That was perfect because I was craving a beef burrito after hearing him talk about their all natural, seasoned to perfection, and hand crafted burritos with over 65,000 combinations of toppings to choose from…… I’m going to get another one right now!

Brother Santo #576

Landing a Job in a Difficult Economy Seminar

I found a lot of this information very valuable and wanted to share!

Basic Tips:
--Interviewing is a game and its all about differentiation.
--January is a good time to interview.
--BE INTERESTED, NOT INTERESTING.

When trying to find a job:
Identify 10 target companies
--Research them, then find out if anyone you know works for them or knows someone that works for them.
--Customize your resume for this particular firm. Mu Rho was looking at a winless 0-4 season last night, but with pride on the line, we played like a team together. Brother Kevin got the team fired up from the get go with a Spartan-esq chant that had the team literally ready to tear Delta Tau Delta apart. The game did not start off pretty though, a quick strike to "cheater girl" had the opponents up a touch down. With Lando as QB, we responded with a quick td strike to Santo in the back of the end zone to keep things close. Catches by all of the girls on offence really had the team firing on all cylinders, not to mention a monster ground game. The girls were running all over them, this was going to be our night! As the first half came to a close, Lando hit Bojangles on a ridiculous corner route that had her running for a td to make Mu Rho ahead at the half, 15-11. After we celebrated the touchdown, we had to be cautiously optimistic. We were ahead, but we recognized we still had another half to play perfect football if we wanted to get the win. The second half proved to be a defensive Quagmire (giggity). Shutdown defense by Mu Rho had DTD stuck without much firepower through most of the second half. Kyra and Brooks, really got in their QB's dome by a constant barrage of blitzing and key sacks that stopped their offence. They were all up in their grills!! Mu Rho moved the ball on offence with key catches by Grits, Santo, and Squared but not enough to put up anymore points. It would come down to the defense to hold the lead. I cannot mention defense, without bringing up Tommy's name. He had a clutch int to take away one of their scores near the end zone. Kyra's 25 yard monster sack had Mu Rho tasting a victory as time ticked away. Mu Rho goal line stand at the last minute of the game was all she wrote. Victory! More than just a win, I feel that this was an UNBEIVELABLE bonding experience for all of the brothers. Not to mention the additional support of our great fans that keep us motivate throughout. I can for sure say that was one of my best moments I have had as a brother in DSP. It was a great way to send us graduated seniors out on a high note. We wrapped up the season by a chant that could be heard through the entire campus. "WHEN I SAY DELTA, YOU SAY SIG! DELTA! SIG! DELTA!SIG!!!"

Brother Santo #576

Recruitment Committee

The recruitment committee had their first meeting October 2, 2008. It was such a success. Everyone came with great ideas and great attitudes. We had a great brainstorming session and we are ready to start working. With the help of this committee, next semester's recruitment is going to rock!!

I also wanted to encourage anyone who is available on Thursdays at 6pm to come. It is a great opportunity to get involved. And we only meet every other Thursday, so it’s not a huge time commitment. We talked at chapter retreat about recruitment being a weakness, so I hope even more brothers become involved in the committee. If you have a dream of ever becoming Senior VP of Deltasig you especially should make the effort to be a part.

Look for new and great things from Recruitment Committee this semester!

Wyoming CSC Fundraising

What a great brotherhood event! The group had a fun conversation in the van on the way up. Once we got to the stadium everyone got their own duties. I personally was close to the field monetring the fans but mostly watching the game. I had the opportunity to critique the cheerleaders, and what a great job they did. Tom, Krystin and I also roped off a path for the Bowling Green players to trot through. Overall it was a very fun event and we bonded while makeing money for the fraternity. I highly encourage going to the next two CSC events at Invesco Field. Nine of us went down to The Ranch in Loveland to help at "A Day for Kids," sponsored by Boys and Girls Club of America and other organizations for kids. The event took place inside and outside, and included rock climbing walls, bungie trampolines, and even a jumping castle. It was really fun! We started off the day stuffing bags and helping out with other set-up activities, then the event was underway. Our primary job involved inspecting car seats. At first, I think we were all a little concerned about the "level of fun" this activity would hold, but it turned out to be great! We got to work outside, play with babies, and take notes on the inspections. Not to mention we all got free food from Texas Roadhouse! The day ended with a quick cleanup and we were off!

So far, the community service position has been really fun. There has been a great involvement of brothers wanting to volunteer. Our next two projects include volunteering at the CSU football game and helping during Make a Difference Day. We will be collecting cans for CSU's Cans Around the Oval at the football game, and we'll be painting the exterior of a clubhouse for the Larimer County Mental Health Society.

Thanks to all of those who helped out on Saturday! Let's keep it up!

Admitted Pledges

Congrats to those newly admitted pledges who received their bids this past Friday! All the brothers who participated did a great job of involving recruits and making a great impression. We had a short week this semester because of the Labor Day holiday; therefore we only held four events.
The first event was Meet the Chapter. Meet the Chapter is our informational meeting. We had free pizza and Deltasig officers spoke about themselves and their position. Our second event was our professional event. We tried a new approach this semester and went with a more hands on event. Professor Maynard from the Management Department facilitated team building activities. It was great interaction between the recruits and brothers. The third event was an ice cream social at Cold Stone. This event went really well. It is always a good time for brothers get to know recruits on a more personal level. We have an ongoing relationship with Cold Stone for these events so they give us a discount! The last event we put on was what we called our “Main Event”. The event was invitation only. We had wings and a ton of food; this was another great event for getting to know recruits on a personal level.
Our new Distrcit Director, Brian, has been helping and guiding us this semester. He has pointed out some areas that we differ from other chapters in a positive and potentially negative way. He pointed out that our Meet the Chapter event is much different than other chapters. Other chapters conduct a more informal and casual event. This is something we will need to consider as a chapter. He also said that other chapters do a 2 week recruitment which tends to be successful for them. If our goal for next semester is to grow numbers we might want to consider lengthening recruitment.
As Senior VP coordinating and planning recruitment it was very exciting to see the event unfold with such success. It is a very rewarding experience knowing that you have such a vital part in the future of our organization. It is a very stressful time since you are coordinating multiple events back to back, but the reward greatly out ways one week of no rest or personal time.

By Kristyn Childress

Results are in!

I would like to first thank everyone who took my online survey! I put a lot of effort into designing the survey so it would give us a better understanding about what is going on within the fraternity. After viewing the results, I am pleased to see that everyone filled them out so thoroughly. As the multimedia chair, Iam looking at the responses that relate to why everyone joined the fraternity. This will help serve as a guide to design advertisments for rush week. What were the results for "reasons for joining DSP" you ask?

1. Meet new people

2. Involement at CSU

3. Increase professionalism

4. Network within Rockwell

These reasons probably don't come as a suprise to many of you. However, it is important that we could actually confirm this with hard data and can be absolutely sure about the importance of each. Resume building was the fifth ranked reason. I think when I include that in advertisments I will change it to a "developing your skill set". The reason for this is becuase I believe that people who join only for resume reasons, just do it to have it on resume and don't stick around for too long. So, I think this approach could appeal to bettering yourself professional without having to say "resume" and is more focused on actaully particpation and ivolvement in DSP. I will include all of these and a few niche advertisments to hit a more targeted demographic. Now comes the fun part, taking these motivations and trying to brainstorm creative and eye-catching advertisments!

By Matt Santomarco #576

Congratulations Seniors!

The Spring semester has ended and that means another great group of DSP brothers will be graduating and entering the real world! We hope they will all keep in touch with the fraternity and serve as active alumni to further expand our networking in the collegiate and business ranks. They have accomplished so much as brothers and their impact as members and as friends will be greatly missed. We know they will make us proud in which every direction their career will take them! Go Mu Rho!

By Matt Santomarco #576
